Rotation Programme for Student Doctors in low-income countries

Within the study programme for the 2nd phase, an student can choose to participate in the Rotation Programme for Student Doctors in low-income countries (Tropico). The student must indicate his or her interest as early as possible in the Master’s programme (about 15 months before departure). When an student has participated in this programme, this will be stated in his or her medical qualifications. The application procedure is described on the UMCN students’ web site; the whole procedure is explained during CKO 1 by the co-ordinator (Dr. Monique Keuter) or deputy coordinator (Dr. Quirijn de Mast) of the Nijmegen Institute for International Health (NIIH).

We strongly advise against joining the Rotation Programme in low income countries to all those who use immune suppressive drugs such as prednisone, anti -TNF or other biologicals. Students who are in doubt about their suitability can make an appointment at the Radboud Travel Clinic (www.radboudtravelclinic.nl) to discuss their ailment.

Students studying elsewhere in the Netherlands can apply via Tropico for a place in the rotation programme after available places have first been allocated to Nijmegen students. They too must comply with all requirements regarding preparation for the programme. In planning to participate in the programme, Faculty regulations must be taken into account. See the Course Prospectus of the Faculty of Medical Science.

Locations

  • Tanzania: Sengerema (https://stichtingvriendensengerema.nl), Rubya (zie www.vriendenvanrubya.org), Biharamulo, Sumve, KCMC Moshi-Huruma / Ghana: Berekum, Techiman. The student has the opportunity to show initiative and take responsibility for a department or a number of patients, generally in a district hospital. The student is supervised by Medical Doctors and Assistant Medical Doctors.
  • IndonesiaSemarang. The student has the opportunity -after a few days in Semarang meeting Dr Hussein - to work for 6 weeks in Mlonggo  (Health Centre) and 6 weeks Jepara (Dr Kartini Hospital), where he or she works in partnership with an Indonesian student in various departments, dealing with various aspects of Public Health and Clinical care.
  • Indonesia: Bandung. The student has the opportunity to work in the Department of Internal Medicine and Paediatrics at Hasan Kadiki Hospital, an university hospital. Afterwards the student goes for 4 weeks to Puskesmas Garuda or another Puskesmas (Health Centre in Bandung) and 4 weeks to Soreang District Hospital, where he or she works in partnership with an Indonesian student in various departments, dealing with various aspects of Public Health and Clinical care.
  • Suriname: Paramaribo and the interior. Please discuss your programme with Dr Keuter before you leave. The student has the chance to gain initial experience in a peripheral hospital. Preventive elements are also involved, through assignments outside the hospital. There are more packages to choose: for example:
    1. Klinisch Diakonessenhuis Internal Medicine (min and max 6 weeks (for Radboud students not 8 weeks), then dermatoly, RGD-district, Interior (binnenland)
    2. Academisch Ziekenhuis Paramaribo SEH (4 weeks), then dermatoly/ stichting Lobi, RGD-district, Interior.   NB After agreement from supervisor Suriname: Neurologie/Academisch Ziekenhuis or Kindergeneeskunde/ Diakonessenhuis, followed  by district/RGD.
  • Nicaragua: Leon. Please discuss your programme with Dr Keuter before you leave. The studentship in Nicaragua offer the possibility of gaining initial experience in the primary health care (PHC) offered by health centres. The approach to PHC covers both curative and preventive elements. An effort is made to deal with the actual causes of many diseases, in the residential and working environment, by developing small projects in collaboration with the population. The students will also work in a hospital in Leon.
    1. Students are advised to start work in the health center close to León (advised: health centre Arrocera)
    2. Secondly in a hospital (HEODRA or hospital primaria, El Sauce)
    3. Lastly in a Puesto de Salud / HC further from León town such as Malpaisillo.
